Metaphor Coaching: The Power of Images to Evoke Change
Metaphor Coaching™ is an evidence-based generative change model providing the “frame flexibility” to evoke a new reality for the emergence of new thoughts, feelings, and actions that can help your coaching client liberate fixed ways of thinking neither previously known nor accessed through rational, analytic coaching approaches.
In this 4-Hour Masterclass, we will explore Metaphor Coaching for you to (1) Learn the basics of inviting your coaching client into a “Generative Metaphor Framing Process” to frame a generative metaphor, (2) Practice session with coaches and observe what happens, and (3) Reflect on what you learned and anchor your progress.
This masterclass is suitable for new and experienced coaches looking for a new approach that moves beyond goal-driven models and is open to exploring a “Generative Metaphor Framing Process” for generative change.
Influence of Metaphors
Metaphors provide evocative imagery that constructs our meaning of reality by establishing the frames for our subjective lived experiences. These frames assist in our thought and language development for making sense in response to a challenge. Research confirms that we use metaphors typically six times per minute unconsciously to make sense of reality and that our reality influences the mind-body connection in how we think, feel, and act.
The outcome of metaphors within coaching provides an inherent imaginative activity that can help a coaching client evoke a new reality in response to their challenge in both cognitive and affective ways. In other words, coaching with metaphors helps a coaching client generate a new perception and interpretation of their challenge by seeing it differently with the frame of a new image for the emergence of new thoughts, feelings, and actions.
What is Metaphor Coaching?
Metaphor Coaching™ is a generative change process providing the “frame flexibility” to invite a coaching client into a “Generative Metaphor Framing Process” to frame a generative metaphor enabling the coaching client to evoke a new reality that shifts their head, heart, and gut-brains into a generative state of embodied alignment.
The design of Metaphor Coaching works from the underlying theoretical basis that metaphors can be identified and developed. Metaphor Coaching as a process does not seek to solve the coaching client’s challenge but helps them move to an external state of consciousness by decontextualizing their current thoughts and feelings with a generative metaphor, thereby enabling them to view their challenge through a new frame to evoke a new reality.
Key Takeaways from this 4-Hour Masterclass Training:
- Understand the theoretical framework that informs Metaphor Coaching as a generative change process.
- Learn how to access and shift your coaching client’s head, heart, and gut-brains for embodied alignment.
- Learn the basics of inviting a coaching client into the “frame flexibility” to elicit a generative metaphor.
- Interactive question and answer session.
Masterclass Training Facilitator
Dr. Richard D. LeBoon is the founder of Metaphor Coaching, established on the culmination of his doctoral research and coaching practice with the design of a “Generative Metaphor Framing Process.” The theoretical framework of Metaphor Coaching draws on the synergy of social constructionist theory, generative metaphor theory, theory of framing, and sensemaking theory. Dr. LeBoon’s research findings counter the limitations of a client-generated or coach-generated metaphor approach that overlooks the co-creative dialogical function of inviting a coaching client into a “Generative Metaphor Framing Process” to bring about a generative change of new perception and interpretation and does not influence or diminish the coach and coaching client relationship.
Dr. LeBoon received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Arts (MA) in Organizational Development and Change from Fielding Graduate University. He holds a Professional Coaching Certification (PCC) through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). He received a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Organizational Dynamics and Change from the University of Pennsylvania. Also, he is an Adjunct Professor at Valley College.
